A flatbed tow truck has a large flatbed or deck on the back of it with a hydraulic lift that lowers the back end to the ground. Once the flatbed is on the ground, the vehicle being towed can either be driven on to it, or winched and pulled on if it is immobile. The flatbed is then raised again, and the vehicle is essentially carried to its destination by the tow truck. No part of the vehicle being towed is anywhere near the surface of the road.

The benefits of flatbed towing
Because the vehicle being towed is raised off of the road, flatbed towing offers many benefits compared to traditional towing. These benefits include:
- No stress on the vehicle
- No risk to the bumper or bottom of the car when going over pot holes or bumps
- No risk to the drivetrain of all wheel drive vehicles
- No risk of being hit by another car
- No wear on the tires
- Risk-free long distance towing
- Easy towing of irregularly shaped vehicles, including motorcycles, farming or construction equipment, or vehicles damaged in collisions
The problems with traditional towing
Traditional towing, also known as wheel lift towing, is accomplished by slipping a metal yoke under either the front or rear wheels and then lifting that end of the car into the air, leaving the opposite set of wheels on the road. It’s common to see wheel lift tow trucks because they’re less expensive than flatbed tow trucks. Just because wheel lift towing is common doesn’t mean it’s better.
One of the biggest problems with wheel lift towing is that it leaves a portion of your car touching the road while it’s being transported. This can result in:
In short, if you’re getting a tow, you don’t want a wheel lift tow. Further, the only reason a tow truck with the old style of hook and chain should ever be allowed near your vehicle is if your vehicle is totaled and being towed to a junkyard. This type of towing can do tremendous damage.
